Creative Shots

Thanks Richie for posting these - a dramatic scene indeed. The fourth one works best for me - the shadows themselves make a strong contribution to the overall composition, but the central female figure seen in silhouette is also a crucial element, as are the flood lighting poles seen in the distance on the right, echoing the concrete pillars of the main structure. I've just got a couple.
Ian's beaten me to the Boxted Walnut orchard - although mine was taken a while ago (when we were allowed to walk through it) and I've shown it before. The second one was taken at Marks Hall.

Lisa your walnut tree shadow is nicely shaped and forms the main focus of the image, the rest of the orchard forming an informative background. The Mark Hall shot is attractive, but the shadow is rather 'overshadowed' by the fiery tree itself. I find the wall on the right tends to lead the eye out of the scene. Maybe a dark vignette would fix this? Phil

Hi all - Many thanks for your kind words re: March images. I was indeed influenced by Andre Kertesz as I admire his very dramatic B & W images.

Here are some shadowy pictures from me. Forgive my late participation - have been pre-occupied with other things!

Here are my favourites...

Phil: all pretty damn good; I particularly like the one of Corinne - it's quite unusual the way the shadow of the hat patterns her face. Also, the fern shadow is a super bit of 'seeing'; I would have probably walked straight past it!

Michele: As most other people, my favourite is the shadow family. The dog is kind of funny and it's good the way the shadows increase in height from left to right. It's also very minimalist - just grass and the shadows.

Ian: my favourite is easily the street lamp. The red brick gives it a lot of colour, which is unusual in shadow pictures. The composition is great; somehow the two street lamps are talking to each other. Ooh, I've just seen a third lamp.

Trevor: Stunning building shot. The central tower just goes up forever. The framing by the two outer buildings is perfect.

Richie: My favourite is definitely the fourth one. Quite minimal, basically just the patterned sand and strong shadows. The shadows are big too, dominating the small figure in the background.

Lisa: I like the Marks hall one best. Partly, it's a simpler composition - essentially just one tree - than the walnuts. Also, there is a strong sense of the tree really being projected onto the wall, which is enhanced by the bright patch of light on the wall.

Ed: The forks have it, just for sheer audacity. A striking pattern.

Thanks Robert for these shots. The York Minster Crypt is great with the sawtooth diagonals curling around the font (if that's what it is) making an arresting pattern of shadows - well seen and well taken. Phil
