Sunshine and showers, rainbows and howitzers

Post by Jim Spurgeon » Mon Oct 12, 2020 1:24 pm

A few shots from our week away in the Lake District.
My post title comes from a walk we did up Helm Crag out of Grasmere. At the top are two rock formations that people go to see, The Howitzer and The Lion and Lamb Unfortunately the weather was against us this day 🌧️ but off we went anyway. Just before we tracked the top I looked towards the sky and said "come on mum, if you're up there and with us give us a break". As we approached the Lion and Lamb the rain stopped ?? The Howitzer is about 60 metres further on and suddenly the sky broke the sun appeared an a rainbow formed over The Howitzer. I quickly broke the camera out of the rucksack, took a few shots, packed away and then it was gone. We were the only people at the top to see it. Literally just as it went the next group up appeared. Again, I looked skyward and said "thanks mum".

Hi Jim,
Great images from your trip to the Lake District. They are all very colourful and nicely composed. The shot of the rainbow over 'The Howitzer' was nicely timed and framed. I especially like the images 'Cathedral cavern' and the reflection of the mountains in the lake waters 'Pleased with this one'. Looks like you both had a great time and took some great shots. Well done.

Hi JIm
Great shots. Really like the use of lead in lines of the dry stone wall on the 'Rain incoming' and the panoramic shot for 'Pleased with this one'.
Makes me want to go back to the Lakes again!

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. The only thing that could of improved my favourite shot was the fly fisherman who was there but he was in the wrong place (quite inconsiderate I thought....lol)

Lovely light Jim. We were in the Lake District a few weeks ago and the weather was hit and miss. Didn't capture the mountain scenes I wanted to because of the wind and rain. Will share a couple tonight but here is one of the Lion and Lamb from outside Wordsworth's Dove Cottage. Not a great shot - only took it as hubby asked as he has been at the top like you.

Hi Lisa I like that shot, it has good potential. Can I ask if you could send me the original I’d like to put a new sky in there and tweak it a little. If you don’t mind that is? Trev

Hi Lisa, thanks for that Ive had a quick edit and a play but may have a longer session with it tomorrow.

Your image is a really sound image and I really like the composition.

Ive added a new sky plus a little sunburst and added a little bit of contrast to the various areas I thought could do with a tweak here and there.

Its all a very subjective thing editing, but it's such a lovely image I think it needed a bit more to bring out the textures and the details in the hills.

Let me have your thoughts? Any other members are welcome to comment.

Hi Trevor, I would have liked a more dramatic sky when I took it. The sun was going down so the sun peeking out from behind the mountain works for me :).

Nice edit Trev. Got to be said though.... geographically impossible to get but nice and it's shows what's capable in the digital world today. We truly can make the impossible possible.

Thanks Jim, yes I know factually not correct. However with all things creative we all see things differently and can utilise our imaginations to create the shots we want. We are only limited by our imagination and how we see the end result of that image. This was my vision when I first saw Lisa’s image and how I visualised the end result. Everything is subjective and there are people who do very little to their images other than the usual edits.
As a photographer I visualise a shot and how I see the end result. Software just helps me achieve it. 👍🏻

Hi All -

Great image, Trevor and Lisa. The 'tweaking' looks sensational and colourful. I hope you don't mind my '£0.02' worth regarding this.

I guess the wider issue is how we present our images to the world. Do we recreate what the eye sees or what the imagination 'sees'? I don't think there is a 'right' answer - I think we should create what we feel at the moment. There is a time for faithfully representing nature as anyone would see it and a time to let our inner expression go and be as creative as we want, be representational or impressionist. As you say, we are all artists in our own right and should take the opportunity to be true to ourselves, our inner vision and celebrate the diversity of all our efforts.

Whew! What a lot of 'waffle'!

Hi Ed nice images, love the Barrack St image. The exposure and the light trail are very well done. I could see that image in a magazine. Well done.

Nice shot Ed, I’m a fan of this type of image. I like the rain running down the window and the blurring of the garden. It’s great it’s not so blurred you can’t make out what it is. Nice composition 👍🏻

Thanks again, Trevor. I was quite pleased with how it turned out.

Looking again at your 'tweaked' image of Lisa's Lake District cottage I think it would also make a superb picture for a large jigsaw puzzle. It has that depth of colour and image sharpness that would really lend itself to that. Great work, both of you.
